I recently got a bass from Musicians Friend and got an open box discount. The discount was enough i got a nice padded gig bag and the bass for quite a bit less than the bass by itself would have run at full price.
I don't know what Sweetwater's discount policy is but if you don't ask you won't get anything.
They are currently offering less than 10%. I'd ask for 20% and be happy with 15%.
It's not like you are under a time crunch so you could wait for no cracked finish and pay full price, which given the current spikes in container space prices, could be 10~20% higher than the current full price.
It's all a gamble and you don't always win, but you will never win if you don't roll the dice.
Update: I decided to buy the demo in black. This one has a tiny dent in the wood near the truss rod adjustment and I talked them down an extra $75. Ended up getting it for $1050 before taxes. I thought about it and really didn't think I'd want to risk the crack getting bigger. The black doesn't look quite as cool as the green, but it's still classy. Thanks everyone!
not at all , I have several "relics" , however I once shipped a very high end bass with that typical little crack by the neck pocket that so many Fender types get and that crack expanded about 6 inches by the time it arrived to the buyer . It must have been the cold weather on the flight as it was very well packed and was not abused in transit . The new owner was not thrilled and I offered a return or enough to cover a refin ( 400 bucks +/- ) That was a bummer .
