How often do you tune?

I don`t have to tune that often because I am only a self-taught hobby/for pleasure beginner. If I were playing with others, performing,in a band, etc. then I would check and tune prior to practicing/performing(or at least check that bass was in tune).

I`m blessed that my "budget" 2002 Squier(by Fender) Affinity P-Bass pretty much remains in tune.My little beginner`s ear has developed enough that I can quickly tell when my bass is not tuned correctly just by playing along with one of my standard "warm up" songs. If I haven`t practiced for a long period of time(say a few weeks or more *embarressed*)then I`ll just check and re-tune just based on.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Personally i check between each song, but i use semi acoustic archtops, flatwound stings, and find that it takes a while for it's tuning to settle. My basses go through some extreme travel/climate conditions in between shows, then exposed to the heat and humidity of stage lighting it pays for me to keep an eye on it.

Best story on such a thing was a clinic the Les Paul and Andres Segovia done in the 80s when a question from the floor asked why he (Les Paul) tuned up after every song and checked it before he played the next, and Segovia did not. Les replied, " well a guess Mr Segovia don't give a s#*t. " :)
