I've played by G&L L-2000 for over 20 years and the tuners are working great and the bass stays in tune very well. In my mind, the tuners should not need to be changed on a quality bass.
I've had to replace two on a cheapie Ibanez GSR200 (A & D) that I've owned for about 15 years and two on a Warwick 6 string Corvette (also A & D) that I had for about 7 years.
I have never replaced any of mine! I have four basses, fender American Jazz, Fender American pre, Musicman Stingray and a Dingwald. The last two are fairly new but have never had that problem with any of them!
