How popular are 8 x 10 cabinets?

I use a 410 but I always want(ed) to add another 410 to my rig. I can get pretty loud, I have a GK 1001 RB and a Neo 410, but still wish I had another 410 if I needed it. I was in an out of town music store over last weekend and the guy who owned the place was retiring and selling his shop to a different guy. I saw a GK Neo 810 there in the corner and was like oh man I want that!! I asked him how much he wanted and he said he'd let it go for $700!!! I was kicking myself because I didnt have the cash. I dont know how I wouldve fit it in my back seat, but I wouldve found a way somehow!! hehe

I'll be playing a vintage Ampeg 8x10 this weekend that will be provided for me. That's the way to do it. So nice!

For rehearsals I've been powering it with a GK MB200, and it isn't half-bad. I'll be using an MB500 for the show.

Powering a 165-pound cab to its limit with a 3.75-pound amp and only having to haul the amp home after the show: Priceless. :)

Had an early '70s Ampeg V4 head and '68 Ampeg 810 provided for me last summer for an outdoor show. Sounded nice, but not "better" than my Markbass LMIII + 2x115 lightweight rig, IMO. I'm satisfied with the new lightweight stuff that's available these days. I have run my LMIII through that 810 cab before, and it sounded really good.

I feel improvements in design and technology has made the days of 8X10 go away. I have only seen one or two in years onstage and that was outdoor shows with national bands. I would not use one if it was given to me free.

Are you hanging around coffee shop gigs or what? I don't know if I have even gone a month without seeing an 810 much less years.

Hecks no national stages, regional, I have seen stacked 4x10's but not 810 fridges ... often even less. Some bass players feel they need more than they do..maybe to compensate for something..who know's?

Agreed,,,,every venue here in Vegas that provides back line always has an Ampeg 810 on the stage and that goes for every venue I go to or work at when doing the road thing,,,, I've played thru more back line 810's than I could even think about counting.

After the last few years of trying to get my sound with smaller combos and 4x10 cabs I finally said screw it last week and went out and bought myself a new Hartke HX810 cab,,,, I'm very happy with my new 810.

I picked the Hartke Hydrive 810 because in my opinion it's the better all around cab than the Ampeg 810,,,,, way better sound than the Ampeg, its lighter and just looks very very cool.

There is such a big difference having your sound at ear level and to me the 810 is easier to transport that luggin around two 4x10 cabs.

On stagehand gigs I do at sports arenas and large soft seaters I still regularly see 8x10 cabs...they seem to have retained their popularity with players who don't have to move the things themselves. I think a lot of guys have just gotten used to them over the years and don't want to fix what in their minds ain't broke. I also see (and use) them at a couple of rehearsal studios I frequent. Mine is permanently parked though and I have no intention of ever using it on a live gig again.

As far as backlines I have seen them. I go to allot of smaller venues 600-2000 to see bands and they use allot of different rigs but I don't see 810's. I do however see bar bands with rigs almost as large when a decent combo or 4x10 would do them justice.

You see what you see doing whatever it is you do and I see what I see loading bands in and out of larger venues for a living. Like I said though the beak point on who still uses fridges these days seems to be whether or not they have to move the damn things themselves.

I completely agree with you that with today's technology there really isn't much need for many (most?) players to use an 8x10 anymore in small/meduim sized venues and so they don't.

I see 8x10s all the time around here (SF/Bay Area), even in small venues (including coffee shops) where such a thing is massive overkill... I've always liked 8x10s but hated the idea of lugging a fridge like that around--I ended up going for two 4x10s, best of both worlds :D I can just use one 4x10 for smaller gigs, and I can actually handle loading in/out both cabs for the whole 8x10 stack by myself when needed.

Understood and I see why they are used in allot of places...I guess I'm out of the loop?
