How the hell are these bands playing live at home?

True. I think Ronnie Wood was on a much lower pay scale for a long time; might still be for all I know.

true, I'm sure. Which is just tragic - his contributions have been critical and huge, and his character is awesome in that group.

Ronnie is a member of the group and Darryl is a hired gun. Ronnie most likely gets less of the album royalties than Mick, Keith and Charlie, but probably more than Darryl. It wouldn't surprise me if Darryl gets 0 royalties of albums.

Anyway, if I were Mick, that's how I'd run things. You don't get to join Rolling Stones Inc. 25 years into the success and get an equal share.

What do you need to make it happen
s0c9 and smeet covered it for you.

everyone in the band has to have a hardwired connection (no wireless!!!) and then be geographically related/close enough to defeat the latency 'effect'.

my jazz band was hot to try it (7 pieces) but only two of us could manage the ethernet connection without a big hassle. we're all using wireless connections for our 'lifestyle'...for a reason!

There's a guy over on Unofficialwarmoth who's building a telephone jammer box to work on POTS. But I suspect in this day of packet switched networks that even that won't necessarily get it done, ever for 'get it done' below 3khz. But he's in Canada - if he's remote enough he might have a copper POTS.

Well the Stones apparently did a live thing with Zoom. Apparently you can use that or a website called Jamkazam. Everyone can play in real time allegedly.

So it looks like I've figured it out. Now I just have to figure out how to make my 10 year old audio interface play nice with it :D

The Stones were clearly playing along to a recorded track.

ALSO - POTS WOULD have worked year ago, but there are no more analog phone lines.

Not to side track your thread, Jimmy, but I never understood why Darryl is never in any of the photos, or even acknowledged most of the time. I mean, he's been the Stones' bass player for a long time now. Why does he never get any love ?
He's a sideman, not an original member. Just like Bobby Keys or Chuck Leavell.

I was in a band like that. The three founding members were on all the promotional material, I was not and was told from the beginning that I was not to be considered a band member. I did it for a while. If I was getting Darryl money to do it, I might have stayed but, there was no money for any of us, let alone enough to be considered a second class citizen :)

JamKazam seems to be working for many that are CLOSE together.(Same city). They do not try to juggle the latencies so long distances can be non-workable. I have been in touch with them to be sure that they realize that every band needs them right now and that we would be willing to subscribe if they get it working better.(it is free at the moment).

Jamulus and Nimjam juggle the delays to make everything seem to arrive at the same time. Don't understand how that works, but it does. Problem - it seems they do only public jams so anyone can drop in unless you are techie enough to set up a private server.

There is some high-end software and plugins for those that have ProTools that seems to be working, but you need your IT person to get it all running.

While you can simply use the mic and headphone out of your laptop, using even a cheap audio>USB interface is much better. If you don't have one, they may be hard to find right now because everyone is telecommuting!

Wi-Fi doesn't work well because of the way it packets the data - not precise enough. You need a cable - even a long one is better than Wi-Fi.

Contact JamKazam on their website and give them some support so they will update the software and push to add more server support and consider a subscription mode to give them some incentive.

My understanding is that the Corporate Entity called The Rolling Stones consists of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Charlie Watts and, as I understand it, Ron Wood, are junior, non-voting partners. All other players are paid sidemen, some of whom have had that status for years.

This can help. But it's your UPLOAD speed that matters the most for real-time colaboration.
Then there are the simple matters of the PC/laptop hardware, OS, ADC, wireless ( bad ), router ( usually bad ), etc. Nothin' but rain here man, sorry. ( this does prove how I can manage to post so much BS on TB )

i have been trying jamkazam, but have not been able to make it "work" yet.
i mean, it works. but the user learning-curve is a big hurdle to get over with a group.
at this point, i have decided to refocus on writing and pre-recording, and having folks add to my tracks, just to keep busy. hopefully we can all get back to safe in-person music soon.

Jamkazam doesn't work. Even when playing along with one of their supplied backing tracks which I downloaded to my local computer, latency was fine until i hit play. As soon as the track started playing, latency becomes unbearable. I have a fast computer. hard-wired 100mpbs internet, a soundcard that can operate smoothly at 5ms latency... but even with the internet not in the picture and my bass direct with no plugins, well over 100ms of latency. un-playable.

I think he’s a permanent hire like Chuck. Not an actual member by contract.

I'm sure bands like The Stones have their management call their people and have the systems set up for them by professionals. Kind of like what my company has been doing for TV and movie editors to work from home during the pandemic: their footage is still on a server somewhere else. We set up a VPN with dedicated bandwidth for starters, then provide up-to-date equipment and people who know how to make it all work manning the battlements. I'm sure test runs and troubleshooting were run as well before going live.

You’re confusing employment with ownership.

There's a large active thread on the DB side about JamKazam and also a number of active threads about other tools.

The summary is that unless you're using the best hardware and Internet service, and unless the group you're working with is geographically close together, and unless there are very few participants, synchronized music sessions can be very disappointing. If you don't need the music to be synchronized, JamKazam and a number of other tools can allow you to put patched sessions together with as many participants and as long distances as desired.

Latency is not a software problem, it is a matter of physics, tied to the speed of light.

Zoom and Skype are great tools, and they work great for one-at-a-time participants. But they don't work well synchronized, and they aren't designed for music.

Eh, this isn't working. Either the latency is too high or the sound is crap. Never mind.

I have been doing trivia games on zoom with friends and family on the weekends since we cant go meet at the restaurant/bar like usual. I have had to help several parents figure out how to get up and running and had them on phone and zoom at the same time getting it sorted and the delay is as much as 8 seconds at time from when I hear them on the phone and when it comes through zoom, so I don't see how it could be viable for a live jam situation.

Ive been wondering like you how to achieve a live jam from different sites.
