How to file frets that are too long?

Hello,

I have a 83-84 MIJ Squier Bullet Bass. I love the neck and its tone but...The frets seem to be too long. They stick out past the edge of the neck on the top and bottom. How do I file them shorter with out destroying the neck?

Or do I have to come to grips that I might take some finsh and a little wood and refinish it? Or is there a jig? I don't know but some help would be awesome!

I recently filed down the bottom of my SX neck. Picked up a file set at WalMart and just went at it carefully. Cam out smooth. Not sure on the size, but about the length of your average ruler.

Hmmm.

That is what I did on a project bass neck. It came out ok but I was wondering it there was a better...less time consuming way.

As long as you're not looking for custom bass perfection:

Tape the neck below the fretboard. [masking tape] Get some 3M sanding pads - coarse and fine. Run them up and down the neck. You'll be fine, and you're neck will feel like buttuh.

If you're anal, ignore my post and take it to a 100 dollar an hour builder.
