how to get d.d verni tone

Oh but back to rotten to the core... I believe that whole album may have been recorded with DD's rickenbacker pre that first BC rich ironbird. N don't forget to use a pick
DD didn't get that tone he is known for until Under The Influence album (3rd record). I believe most if you hit it on the head with the scooped mids, EMG actives, a little OD/Distortion, new steel strings, a pick, etc.
I was a huge fan of his. I had several of those Widows built for me.
I also had the peavey 2 10" 1 18" can and that ADA MB-1 preamp. His preset on it still doesn't sound right. Although that was a pretty awesome preamp. The above mentioned mix of things is what will get closest to that tone.
He's endorsed all kinds of equipment so its always changing. I guess his only mainstay are the Widow basses, but I don't even know who builds them because I know BC Rich doesn't for him anymore. I think KxK perhaps.

I've always liked his tone from the Years Of Decay album to the latest. You can see partially what he's using in this photo. I don't know when it was taken.
DD has been my #1 bass hero for at least 25 years now. I've never been able to match his tone perfectly but the closest I can get is by cranking the mids and playing through 10's. I've never been a mid scoop fan at all because it robs all the clarity out of the bass tone.
You could probably easily get that tone with an SVT, a P-bass, and a pick. Dial in the tone knob to your liking.
I was in a Top 40/modern rock band that used to cover Old School by Overkill, and no lie, it always packed the dance floor.
My guitarist and I were always blown away at how bad Overkill's guitar tone was for a national band that's been around for a few decades. You'd think a producer would have came along during that time and said, "Hey guys, this tone just isn't working."
