Hello, looking for tips on how to get this j-rock tone.
it sounds like this.


and what is the difference of between distortion and overdrive? and how is gain different from adding volume?

You need a drive pedal- I think one of these Geddy Lee YYZ pedals would do the trick.

The bass and type of pickups are a big part of the tone too - sorry can't tell what he's playing from this angle. I think a fender jazz-type of configuration would get you close.

Overdrive and distortion are similar; both caused when the gain stage is high enough to push the amp or pedal past it's clean operating limit. Distortion is generally much more intense.

Also, play with a pick and wear a white dress shirt open to the 2nd button.

But also, gain is basically volume that feeds into another stage of the circuit. So for a distortion or overdrive circuit it's usually acting as an 'anount of dirt' knob, but that's not what the gain knob is designed to do on a mixer, for instance.

This is not a great technical description, but I think it's adequate for how it works at the user level.
