How to get this tone? (Bilderbuch)

All throughout the verse (starting at 0:16) of the song Maschin by Bilderbuch. How could you achieve this sound using effect pedals? (synth?)

I don't even know if this was done on a bass guitar in studio or not :D

In this live performance the bassist doesn't seem to even try recreating the sound of the recording...

Sounds to me like a. Boss OC-2 (or equivalent octave pedal) using the 1 octave down on full and the dry bass signal all the way off.

Check out the video below from Scott's Bass Lessons - Ian Martin Allison talks about using this trick all the time. Depending on what octave pedal you use the sound may not be exact but it'll be close enough for jazz 😉

The live performance doesn't bother to copy the album version's tone. They just did a live version of it with a different setup. (And miraculously everyone in the band survived. Obsessive tone chasers would have you believe otherwise.)

It doesn't sound like the album version is a synth bass. It sounds, like @Daveypoo said, the classic: octaver pedal, only one octave down, 100% wet, with a wee bit of some kind distortion on top for a little extra synthy grit to it.

Thanks for the responses I‘ll have to try around with an octaver on 100% blend.

There is something extremely synthetic about the studio version that seems to go beyond synth emulation with octaver and some distortion/light fuzz.

Save to say if it‘s an actual bass guitar on the studio version there is probably heavy compression on it as well …
