HOW TO INSTALL UBUNTU STUDIO 9.10 WITHOUT HAVING THE INSTALL #%$&%# FAIL!:

Puppy looks good but I cannot find a valid download source for it.
I remember a post that said you can run Ubuntu Studio from USB. When I try it all it wants to do is install, which is not helping.
Does anyone know how to set up a USB to run Ubuntu Studio?

Have you tried booting with the Ubuntu Studio 9.10 (hopefully) install DVD and installing onto a USB flash drive as one would install onto a regular hard drive?

I'll try it this weekend.
I've never converted an iso to a bootable CD before.
The only thing I've done with them is using a little program I found to make them into bootable USB devices.
Any suggestions or is it as simple as copying it to the disk?

Ubuntu Studio 9.10 is stable and has a real time kernel needed to achieve the lower latency required to run audio recording applications in a more effective manner. Ubuntu Studio 10.04 does not have an rt kernel and generally performs more like a beta version than a finished release.

When you download the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (you may wish to stay with the 32 bit version - PC (Intel x86) alternate install DVD - for better compatibility with some 3rd party audio plug-ins and WINE) be sure to check its md5sum to ensure the .iso downloaded in an uncorrupted state. (A list of md5sums can be found near the bottom of the .iso's source page.)

winMd5Sum - Freeware Windows MD5 checksumming utility: http://www.nullriver.com/products/winmd5sum This is used to verify the integrity of downloaded .iso images and other files. It works by comparing the downloaded .iso or file's md5sum with the md5sum for said .iso or file listed on the .iso image or file's Web site.

After the .iso md5sum confirms that all is kosher then you'll need to burn said .iso to a DVD+R (preferably, because it's a newer, more fool-proof disc type) or to a DVD-R (with this older disc type one should select a slower burn speed, 4X has worked for me. Doing so is standard procedure for burning OS install discs regardless of the platform involved).

When you boot up with your newly burned DVD it's a good idea to test the disc's integrity by selecting the relevant option from the list of options which appears early in the boot.

Oh and please don't forget to read the OP in this thread which describes and outlines a work-around for the install glitch that occurs when installing Ubuntu Studio 9.10 on a PC which does not have a wired & functioning Internet connection.

Now having said all of the above I'm sceptical that Ubuntu Studio's installer will want to install Ubuntu Studio onto a USB flash drive but I haven't tried doing so myself, so who knows?..
 
I messed up and used 10.4 instead of the older one. I already had it downloaded and used it without thinking.
It is nothing like the regular Ubuntu in terms of ease of use. I couldn't figure out where to do the network setup and the audio has the same problem with regards to the headphones/speakers.
The good news is that it did install to a USB drive.
Oh well, maybe next year my annual attempt will go better.

There are a variety of Intel chipsets and onboard graphics. Some work under recent versions of Ubuntu, some don't.

Could you please run sudo lshw in Terminal and post the entire output here?

Identifying an Intel chipset whose integrated graphics works under Ubuntu 10.04 may be helpful to others.

The Ubuntu Studio install DVD uses a text-based installation scheme borrowed from Debian (I believe) as does the Ubuntu Alternate Install CD. It is more complicated than the Ubuntu Desktop Install CD but it offers a much greater range installation options.

The instructions in the OP of this thread re how to install Network Manager etc from the Ubuntu Studio 9.10 Install DVD don't work with 10.04's DVD. This, along with the problems mentioned earlier are reasons to stay with version 9.10.

Hopefully Ubuntu Studio 10.10 (to be released at the end of Oct.) will work properly. The newer kernels employed in successive Ubuntu releases support an ever-expanding range of hardware.

From previous posts, I understood the benefits of going with the previous version instead, but I had already downloaded 10.4 and headspaced on downloading the older version.

It was touch and go, mostly because I didn't really know what I was doing and had to guess frequently, but it runs fine off the USB. I'm blanking on the name right now, but I even put the boot manager on the USB drive and it offered Windows from the HD and Ubuntu from the USB.
Someone with more Linux experience might have had better luck with the other stuff, like setting up ethernet, than I did.
I am currently running PureDyne from a CD and it was very easy to get the internet up. It recognized the wireless chip on its own. All I had to do was select a network and enter the password. I haven't tested the headphone jack yet because I need to put some audio on a USB stick. I'll report back later with that.

I am no longer convinced that it wasn't dual booting Linux that toasted my last laptop.
The cooling system might not work!?!? What kind of crap is that?

Based upon the experiences you've had I don't blame you for your suspicions and for feeling as you now do. In your position I'd feel the same way.

I've tried and immediately discarded a number of other GNU/Linux distros which fell on their face right out of the gate when run on the hardware which I currently own, even though said distros have allegedly worked well for others on their PCs.

With the irritating exception of Ubuntu Studio 10.04, the Ubuntu family of OS' has worked better for me than either Windows XP Pro SP2 & 3, or 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium on the modest hodge-podge of PCs I use.

When it comes to running GNU/Linux on old (or new) ostensibly Windows-only consumer grade hardware it is prudent to do some thorough research beforehand as to which distro(s) to try.

EDIT: The Recommended Hardware List:
"Recommended hardware is hardware that Ubuntu users have had no problems with whatsoever. They don't need extra tweaking or special drivers or configuration file editing..."

However, when it comes to making a strategic purchase of new hardware for personal use, there are a growing range of bona fide GNU/Linux PCs to choose from...

The puppy download links are working now, file was still uploading I think when you checked. I am having more luck with the iso labeled 1.9 (which is 2.0) than with 2.1 at the moment, but hopefully the issue (firewire audio) will be resolved quickly.
