I found a problem that was supposedly fixed.
When I plug headphones in, the laptop speakers stay on under Ubuntu.
This does not happen in Windows.
Once again I am at work as I type so I don't know the sound card type.
I found an article about adding a line to what appears to be the Ubuntu equivalent of an ini file but apparently even though I am the only person using the computer, I don't have the authority to edit it.
The article said to log in as root. How does one go about doing that when their installation ("installation" doesn't sound right for a USB boot, but oh well) doesn't verify who they are to begin with?
Can I just boot to Windows and edit the file in Notepad then boot back into Ubuntu?
What's the model # of your HP Compaq Presario?
The next time you boot your notebook, in Terminal type alsamixer and see if you can't just mute your Compaq's internal speakers.
Also, please run sudo lshw in Terminal and post the entire output here so that we can see exactly which hardware your notebook is comprised of before we edit anything.
Thank you.
