How to Play with Chrome Pickup Covers?

Here's what I did when I was deciding about the PU covers. I stuck the PU cover on with double sided 3M foam tape I found at the hardware store. Voila, reversible mod. It's very tenacious and takes a good pull to get it off, but the tape comes off cleanly.

I started using the cover on my P just as Jamerson did. Before I saw any footage of him playing. In fingerstyle it seems natural to rest either your unused fingers (thumb or pinkie/ring) on the cover. I like it, but am not married to it. My shortscale doesn't have a cover.

I've got covers on a few by now and find them to not impede my playing at all.

The Elixir Nanos all have fuzzed spots right where the covers aren't anyway - so I guess I was always playing there already.

My bass is a Fender 50's Precision. I put the pickup cover on with doublestick tape (thanks for the suggestion) and like the look and feel. It changes my position a bit, not not in a bad way. It's just a shift. If I put the bridge cover on with the same tape, I wonder if it will effect the finish if I ever decide to remove it?

While we're at it, how far apart are the mounting hole centers supposed to be on a Fender Precision bridge cover?

The one I have here in my hand is about 4", but that's a bit wider than the original holes on my 1972, which seems like 3-3/4" or 3-7/8"...

Did they vary by year, or is this some no-name job from a clone? I found it in a Fender case I bought.

I did a lot of shopping for my Precision with the stock and really wide bridge and I couldn't find anything more or less than what I found to be the 'standard' for Precisions - a 4-incher at the holes.

The Jazzes have two types - one with and one without the script-F on it - but the 'without' version seems to be gone now AFAICT.

Now - the Precision p'up cover screws are supposed to be 4.650" - but there's some fudge there too as long as it doesn't hit the strings.

There you have me. I never tried the bridge cover with the tape except to position it. I wanted to use it for a mute, so I drilled the holes as I didn't know if the tape would hold.
