How to remove dried polyurethane from ebony without sanding?

If you add “between the frets” dots now and someday go back to on the fret position dots will that just be confusing? You may be fine. I’ve switched between fret line and dots on the fret position unlined basses with no more issues then I usually have with things.

I don’t think that would be a tough shift. Beyond that, having the sidelines with no dots in between is a mess. Very difficult to know where you are.

Maybe just pick some markers that don't require overcoating. These stay stuck to ebony just fine and also peel off without much hassle:
