How to store strings

So I took the flats off of my bass and put round wounds on. I also took the E and A strings off from that set and put higher tension strings on. I just kinda rolled them up like how they come in the package and stuck them in a file cabinet with some other bass stuff.

Is there anything special to be done to store the strings not being used right now?

I've been thinking whether the best storage method for the strings is hanging them straight on the wall. I remember reading a claim to this fact somewhere, might have been Circle K strings..

I've got a rehearsal space out in my shed, been considering if I should hammer in four small nails for each set and hang them by the ball ends. That sounded dirtier than I planned..
