Double Bass How to take off rubber grip

I'd cut it too. You can get the tubing cheap from McMaster-Carr. By the time I have a reason to remove the grip, it's usually begun to deteriorate anyway.

What works for removing bike hand grips is to sneak just a drop of water under the grip, squirm it around with my hands, and the grip just slides off. Don't know if you'd want to do that to a nice wood bow stick, though.

Take the frog and button off, and you should be able to roll it off. If it's being particularly stubborn, a little bit of baby powder helps. When it gets wet the rubber sticks to everything.

I'd never try one again. I damn near unraveled the whale bone (imitation?) on my bow trying to "roll" one on.
I finally cut it off. I sent it, and the other new one (they came two for about $5), back to Gohlinar (sic?) for a partial refund, but I guess it ended up in the round file at the store? Chalk it up to experience :scowl:

Some of them do definitely fight more than others. I personally don't use one, but working on bows, I see them from time to time. They often do more harm than good, but that's another story for another day.

There is a post about windings and grips happening in Bows and Rosin. might be worth exploring.

As an alternative to gum rubber, I have tried EPDM foam tubing:

I got the 5/8 x 1/2 size. It's not sticky like rubber, so it slides on and off easily. The piece that's on my one bow has been there for well over a year and does not seem to have deteriorated at all and still slides off (just checked again). Also, the varnish on the bow appears to be un-damaged by the tubing.
