Double Bass HOW to try options, given prices?

String Emporium is is a really good company. You may not get much direct interaction from Steve, depending on how busy he is, but if you're just getting strings that shouldn't be an issue...

String Emporium and Gollihur are my go-to for strings. Can't remember buying strings from anyone else in the last few years.

The last time I bought strings from String Emporium, he sent me a wrong string and I couldn’t get in touch with him, despite trying for well over a week. So I ended up buying the string I needed from Gollihur and selling the other one on this forum. It’s the only time I’ve had any trouble ordering from him.

I was sent the wrong string once from him, but had no trouble returning it for a replacement.

sadly the only way to really try strings is to buy a set, used or new. if you don't like them you can attempt to resell to recoup a portion of the cost. i try to do alot of research before buying a set and consider what my bass tends to like, and try to stick with stuff that is fairly widely used rather than really niche sets. at this point though, all roads tend to lead to Spiros or guts, but it took alot of spending to come to that conclusion for myself.

At one point I bought so many strings, I still haven't put some on. I can always trust Spiro , I really like the Perpetual standard set and if I will be bowing more Flexocor Deluxe. will get back on. I have 2 basses . I am stocking on these 3

If things get bad with tariffs , then I'll just get American strings. I like the D'Addario offerings and will gladly use the Zyex again
