How was this recorded?

I was watching this video:



and the drums when he is playing sound absolutely amazing. I see no mics anywhere... so I assume everything is overheads.
This is the kind of sound I'd like to have when my band records demos, but my recordings never ever sound that clear.

I use an Onyx 1640i into my macbook running Cubase.
the mics I use are all dynamic (sm57s, sm48s, audix bass mics, etc). perhaps that's the issue?
I use a 4-mic Glyn Johns technique most of the time.

what kind of gear/methods would produce that crystal clear sound?

I'll bet it was recorded with one stereo microphone plugged into the camera. People always seem to think that you need a bunch of microphones to get a good drum sound. It's just not true! What is needed is a good drummer with a set of well tuned, good drums.

Definitely just an overhead or a high end camera mic. You can hear it in how thin the kick sounds.

Well... Not thin, but definitely not a close mic'd kick.

I subscribe to Electronic Musician, and from articles there I get the sense that a good number of producers seem to be experimenting with fewer mics placed farther from the drums--or bass cab, even!
