How would 3fingers increase my speed?

It may not increase your speed at all. The fastest finger players I've heard on either bass or guitar (ever heard a top-flight flamenco guitarist?) tend to use two fingers in alternation.

This is not meant to discourage you or to say you shouldn't try it, it's just a caveat that going to three fingers is not guaranteed to be The Answer.

i agree....i tryed useing the three finger technique for a good long while...like six months or so....i like it for nice clean triplets...but for when im playing fast...i'd take the alternating two any day...it sounds a little cleaner, and it's too much work to get three fingers going to speed when you can get two to do the same ammount...it saves my chops a bit too

I play 3 finger most of the time, because it's practical.
I could play 2 finger just as fast. Doesn't change anything to speed.

i live dream theater, john myung is a technical mastermind. however i really see no point to 3finger playing, unless of course you are playing The Dance of Eternity or some other Dream Theater song/flight of insanity. there are some lines out there where 3fingers make it easier but i have been trying to master it over the past couple of months and it seems really difficult. i've spent long enough making my 2finger playing fast and i am content

Usually when people say that either Cliff Burton, or Alex Webster uses four fingers to play. They are completely wrong. It only looks like they are using four because they pinky involuntarily moves. Just to show you guys.
Move just your ring finger. Notice the slight movement in the pinky? Now move just the pinky. Notice the radical movement in the ring finger?

Alex maybe, cliff= incorrect IIRC. It says it in the so what book. I remember reading a passage in their somewhere that has james quoting that cliff used mostly 3 or 4 fingers.

Yeah, Alex uses four fingers... I know someone who knows him and has told me that he uses four fingers. With constant speed riffs in CC who wouldn't?
The best sounding four finger technique has got to be Billy Sheehan. I have a video of one of his bass clinics in Japan. It was blazingly fast.
I use two fingers for controlled staccato riffs and three for really fast scalar type riff. Take Scarified by Racer X. I would use two fingers for the first solo, and three for the second one.
