How would you set this type of non amp/cab rig?

If I went amp-less and cab-less.....how would I do it?
If I were to go with a pedal board..... and other than a few effects like an octive, eq, chorus, bass wah and probably some sort of pre amp how would I run this rig? I'm referring to an in ear system and a really good DI ofcourse.
When I was touring in 08' I used a full rig. But the two guitards used this kind of system. I never paid attention to how they were set up. Is this kind of system difficult for club type sound men to deal with? Is It a pain to set up/maintain? Not to sound like a noob but this type of thing is completely foreign to me.
Now with the in ear system other than hearing my own sound I should be able to get everyone else in my in ear mix also if I choose right?

As for the DI, I would definatley want a tube unit. Keeping in mind also I'm a big fan of amps like Ampeg, Orange, ect....as far as tone. So if any tube DI's lend themselves to that type of tone give me a heads up. I dont want a VT bass or anything digital like that. I wanna keep it old school if I do it. That goes for all pedals too.

Just pondering a few things as far as not lugging around a 150 lb cab and a 80 lb front heavy rack. But I'm such a big fan of feeling the air from my rig I dunno if I could do it.

I run sound for a band and I would think that this set up would be very easy and save me a lot of trouble. becouse you could hear your self any were on the stage and also be able to lower stage volume. in order to do it I would put a spliter at the end of your board and have one go DI to the FOH and the other go to an in ear monitoring system. It sounds like a cool idea

Get a really nice pre like the Tech21 SV Deluxe pedal. Run any effects in the loop. If the box you use (like my SansAmp) doesn't have an effects loop on it, then buy a Radial J48 to go from the effects chain to the board. This has worked very well for me. Tech21 and Radial make some very quality stuff.

I actually have a custom made switch pedal that has two inputs so I can have 2 basses plugged in to the same amp and I just pick the bass i want and hit the foot switch and the input thats hot lights up. The box also has an effects loop in it that it switchable on/off so any pedals I have wont be in the signal chain when not in use. I had it built for me by Jerry at FJA.
If I didnt use a pre amp I would use that box. I dont know for sure if I would want a pre like a sansamp or whatever. I would try it first most likely with the bass tone into a 9 or 11 band EQ, then into the tube DI. I'm sure I would end up with something like a sansamp or something similar on the board though.

You'd have your own monitor mix for your IEM send - basically, you'll tell them what you want to hear, and *hope* they get it right enough to be workable...

As for the rest, I'm setting up a small pedalboard that would do this job pretty well - it consists of:

XDS-PLUS -> Pitchblack tuner -> VT pedal -> Countryman DI

My idea is to use this for a "backup amp", but it will also double as a way of running into someone else's effects return or power amp, to give me a consistant sound going to the board...

Personal opinion is always use a preamp. That way you can get in good control. Not sure I can go for the tube DI thing. As far as I know, they're really meant for a different application.

so your saying no DI and just run the signal to FOH from an out on a preamp? But i'de obviously have to split that so the in ear could have a feed too.
I remember pricing a good in ear unit while i was on tour back in 08' with my old band and it was like $600 for a decent one. If I were going to run just a preamp I would probably just run a SVP. I guess I could just use a 6 space rack instead of a pedal board and maybe run 2 pre amps and have a foot switch for each one. Or I could stay with a pedal board and have Jerry at FJA Mods build me a stomp box pre amp.

the vt isn't digital. it's actually an analog preamp. but even though i would probably just use my vt deluxe if i went ampless on live gigs, it's only because i have it tweaked the way i like it. they can be a little tricky to use as preamps until you get used to them. so if you'd rather not deal with it, i'd probably say go with an svp-cl. world class, reasonably priced, sounds like ampeg.

of course, the likelihood of me ever going ampless is only slightly higher than the likelihood of me winning lotto tonight

Again after last nights show I just dont think I could go ampless in the current band I'm in. We put on a big production when we play so I just dont think I could bring myself to do it. The way the sound fills the stage and smacks you in the back, I dont think I would feel right without it. I dunno...

I was about to chime in but Jimmy beat me to it. Not all "modeling" boxes are digital. I would go so far as to say the best ones arent! I have done a few rig-less gigs. IME it's okay if the style of music doesnt call for much in the way of bass tone aside from clean and deep. If you get into effects or drivey sounds than it's good to have an onstage rig to "monitor" from. I like to have a safety corner to run to so that I can stay in tune and on-time if the stage monitors arent happening for bass. When bass is efffected it seems that sound guys turn it down or cut the upper mids to let the vocal stay present.
