My own uneducated, subjective experience with ancient cabs is that some of them do get very loud with a smaller wattage amp, but they don't have the low, low end a good modern cab can deliver. I think that's in line with BFM's "200HZ" post.
Some time ago I read that Bag End D12-E cabinets actually worked well with this amp, if one EQ'd the amp with the cab's inherent voicing in mind. I could only find 2 locally that were affordable, so I used a Carvin 10.2 NEO becasue the price and size were right. Without the Carvin, the D12s have no highs, and very strong boom. The Carvin seems a mite mid shy (maybe just "flatter?") but has nice highs and tight low end. They work well together, and the whole thing breaks down to fit in a small car.
Currently I use just the Carvin , sufficient for group practice or smaller rooms. Sounds fine on its own, but I prefer the D12 augmenting it. If I had to choose just one type if cab, X3, I'd pick the Carvin (or the 4X10 version) but I like the way my current stack sounds.
If I had the $$ and the space for it, I'd contact Monolith and have 3 4X15s built.
