Hey y'all and greetings from Cincinnati!
After a long hiatus from playing both guitar and bass, I'm getting back up to speed with both. TalkBASS started showing up in my Google feed so here I am.
I bought my first bass in 1980 - a 1960 Gretsch 6070. I was walking past a variety store in Reading Pennsylvania and saw it hanging in the window for a very reasonable selling price. I was familiar with the Gretsch nameplate since my Dad played a 1953 Gretsch Syncromatic (now in my collection). I set up a lay-away plan with the store and used my lawn-mowing cash to pay it off. With the addition of a Sunn 2000S head and matching 2x15" speaker cabinet, I found myself in demand for a spot in local garage bands.
A couple of years later, I saw a used 1974 Rickenbacher 4001 in a music store and had to have it. Chris Squire was my idol back in those days. Lots of minimum-wage hours later, it was mine.
I played my last gig in 1984 after my freshman year of college. After that, the basses were collecting dust and my amp stack sat in the old band's practice room for five years. I eventually retrieved the amp but ended up selling it in the early 2000's since it was taking up space. That was a sale that I wish I could undo...
A late-career job change found me moving from Harrisburg PA to Cincinnati. The new house has a formal living room and we didn't have any furniture to fill it. My wife graciously suggested that we turn it into a music room. With a dedicated space, I picked up a cheap Behringer head to use with my vintage Sunn 1x15" cabinet. So now I'm back in business. As I like to say, my neighbors are listening to good music. Whether they like it or not!
Glad to be here.
