How's my playing/production?

Hi Justin,

I'm a 19 year old aspiring bass player/producer/arranger/songwriter/general-music-person (and a massive fan of your playing and production work).

I was recently asked to produce/arrange a song that my friend wrote for his masters in film.

I worked out an arrangement from a demo he sent me of just acoustic guitar and vocals (which can be heard here: Outside of Time (Demo) by Henry Durham on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free).

I sequenced all the software instruments (everything but the rhythm section), sang the backing vocals and played bass. It was recorded by a friend and I at my house.

I'd be honoured if you could take a listen and let me know what you'd do differently (as a bass player, producer or whatever).

Just a note, there are two verses worth of music with no vocals after the first chorus: this is to accomodate for dialogue in the film.

Nicely done! I don't really have time to do a full-on assessment of this, but it's quite lovely. Reminds me of Scott Walker/Divine Comedy/Pulp a bit. Mix wise, the vocals could be better integrated. Needs some "glue" like good quality mix bus compression as well. Also seems to be missing some "air" on the top...stuff that depends a great deal on mics and converters, unfortunately. But that's just a few rough & ready mix notes. It's a cool production, overall. Good luck with it!
