hughes and kettner red box

Have any of you guys ever used a hughes and kettner red box for live bass???? or even the behringer gi100 with the cab simulation?

I'm looking at some vintage tube amps, and I do not typically like the sound of DI bass. I want to get the sound of my amp to the PA. It seems most sound guys prefer a DI to micing, so I'm trying to think of a solution that would actually use my amp as the basis for the tone and send a cabinet simulated DI to the mains.

My fear is that the red box might be weak on the low end as it is designed to simulate a guitar cab. But it allows you to plug in between the head and cab so it captures both the preamp and power sections of the amp then adds a 2x12 or 4x12 cab simulation on top of that.

I could use a bass pod or something but that seems counterproductive.

Any thoughts or real world experiences with the red box???

I've used it a couple times...didn't like it. I could get a decent sound out of it but it's way more geared for guitar than bass. Has an OK low end but could be better and cuts off the high end too low for my tastes. I'm probably going to sell it to a guitarist...it kills on guitar. Countryman Type 85 or Radial JDI (never knew it did speaker level but the sound company on my gig last night had one and it was really good) is the way to go for speaker DI.

hope that helps. the countryman and radial are around the same price point and have very similar features. i wonder which would sound better in this instance????

I've used it in a bi-amp rig on the HIGH side of the rig. It works perfectly for me in that application. I use a standard DI for the low side.
