You could be right. I looked at their informal rankings (based on THD and noise); the top spots were all Purifi, Hypex, Class AB, and one THX (class H?). But there is no systematic selection process; they test whatever people send them. They haven't tried to systematically answer "which module is best?"

and it doesn’t matter one bit for bass applications anyway.

I suspected but wanted to ask. I do like my ToneHammer, 10% thd and all.

Can you show one example? Where does he even say anything that could be mistaken for snake oil? He spends a lot of time debunking audiophile myths.

I don't think Agedhorse and I are even disagreeing on anything fundamental. If he says that the 10% THD spec is from intentionally generated distortion in the preamp, this makes perfect sense and would explain a lot.

My original points were only that 1) Purifi modules measure better than the others, in a hifi context, and 2) I don't know if this would be relevant in any way to bassists, but it would interesting to know.

True he may debunk some but in that process he seems to keep it all alive. Maybe it's just how I view the audiophool world in general.

Different colour wires and power cables promoting different frequencies and sound stage improvements.
Keeping your cables off the ground with cable lifters and rocks, crystals on top of your amplifier improving output and sound. I guess if you want to invest in that stuff its ones own business and there seems to be a lot of businesses out there willing to work with you.

I am not saying I can't hear the difference between one turntable cartridge over another, or one brand or model of speaker over another. But interconnects, speaker wire, power cables, rocks? I am not going down that rabbit hole.

The expensive wires measure the same as cheap ones within a tiny fraction of a db in all relevant ways. He goes to great lengths to anticipate objections by audio flat-earthers, and still they protest.

I can definitely say that the green herbal incense my friend used to bring around back in the 70's sure made the music seem better, once we lit that stuff up everything got better.

All of this is WAY over my head, but I admire the designers that can take all these random electronic parts and have 1) the engineering chops and 2) the ears to craft the metal boxes full of little electronic bits into musical instruments. A very small and talented club, indeed.

And Short4 and I must be distant relatives, as when I look back, I never sounded better than rack preamp/commercial big iron amps/plus dbx, etc. We must be charter members of the 'Big Amps Turned Up to Three' club. My days of a Yamaha PB1, a 2200 amp, and the single channel dbx compressor (160? it's so long ago now) over JBL Cabaret 15's was the best I ever sounded, and probably the one rig I miss, heavy as it was.

There's smooth, and then there's this. 'Natural Sound Power Amplifier' was most definitely true.

Both have different modules
ranging in power.
Low distortion is somewhat negligible
for instrument amplification.

More a goal for
live audio mains systems or large theatre and home HiFi

Hypex high power modules
measure lower in THD
compared to equal power IcePower.

Reliability has been found equal
among both brands.
