hypothetical

i dont. i hate 15's and would never use them (unless somebody shows me one that meets my expectations)
i was just thinking maybe it would work for the people who do use the 115/410 combo.

This is really what most people are saying "maybe it would work" for some.

There's are many parameters to design a single cabinet. When you stack or side-by-side cabinets you're essentially doing cabinet design on a large scale. Maybe it works.

Very true, I did not expand the thought fully. (I tend to do that intentionally so more than one poster answers and a consensus forms which can carry more weight.)

Ah, right.

In any case, I see little advantage to running two rigs with the cabs being the only difference.

Now, if one wanted to run effects through one, and just clean through the other, that would make perfect sense.

Deciding how to split that up, though, would be a bit of an issue. If I were doing it, which I wouldn't be, because I've already got a rig I really like, but just hypothetically, if I were doing overdrive as one of the effects, I'd cut some (but not all) of the low end on the 15"s and run the effects through that rig, and have the rig with the 4x10 cabs clean.

The basic problems remain. The 15" adds a bit of volume to the 4x10, but not as much volume as another 4x10 would, while typically also having different (usually lower) power handling.

Can it sound good? Sure, but it's a bit of a crap shoot, whereas if you find a cab you like, and just get an additional one, it's just the same tone you already like but more of it.

Some people believe that 15"s inherently go lower than 4x10 cabs. This is not necessarily the case, and really depends on the specific cab being used. I bet a 410HLF goes lower than my 2x15, but fortunately, a really deep tone is not what I'm after.
