hypothetical

(gotta get this out of the way) already did a search, couldnt find what i was looking for, so dont tell me to do a search.:scowl:

with that being said:

i know that the idea of matching a 115 with a 410 isnt the most favorite around here. i still dont know exactly why this is, but i know part of it has to do with stressing the 115 out.

so i was thinking, what if you use different heads? for example, two svt 4 pros. one hooked up to two 115s and the other hooked up to two 410s. would this fix the problem? or is there more to it than that? :confused:

again this is purely hypothetical, i would never play with any sort of 15 inch speaker (i prefer tens, just my personal opinion):bassist:

The problem is that you're going to get arguments from both directions, none more convincing than the other. My point is, "If it sounds good, it is good." It really doesn't matter what the proponents of either side say. As for me, I've mixed drivers in the past and stopped doing it because it didn't sound good to me. Specifically an Eden D-115XLT with a D-210XLT, both of which are premium cabinets in their own right but just interfered with each other.

Conversely, I tried a Bergantino AE210 on top of an AE112 and it didn't suck at all. Hence, my comments.

You can deal with the different power requirements of the two cabs by using a stereo amp like an Eden WT-800 or by using a preamp with a separate stereo power amp. You could even stick a crossover in there to send different frequencies to the two cabs, keeping in mind that the assumption that the 15 will produce better lows is generally fallacious. I've always preferred the lows out of a good 410 over 15s by far.

Now I will go don my nomex suit for the inevitable impending inflagration.
 
what exactly does that mean? dispersion patterns? please forgive my ignorance.

Here's an example of what the dispersion patterns look like when you separate subwoofers from each other by more than one-quarter wavelength. This is not exactly the same as what you get by mixing driver sizes, but similar things can happen. This is comb filtering, and it's real.

Basically what everyone is saying is, hypothetically it will not sound good. The science behind the idea of two mixed driver stacks next to one another will cause all kinds of problems.

If you were to actually set up this monster rig, it may be the best sounding rig of all time, proving all of us wrong. The science will still say it is inefficient and fighting with itself, but your ears may like the way it sounds, others not so much.

I think this line is used way to much on this site some times, but you have to try it out yourself. Putting this rig on a stage and walking around the whole room with a wireless is the only real way to see if it is possible. No one is going to be able to tell you what it really sounds like in person, we can only tell you what it will hypothetically will sound like, a hot mess.

...you're kind of heading into bi-amping territory -basically separate amps powering separate cabinets doing separate frequencies, of course the use of two heads isn't 'technically' bi-amping however with decent tone controls on each amp you kind of aproximate the idea...perhaps you could tweak the two 4x10 cabs till they sounded great then back off the bass a little bit, if adjusted properly both 15's might be able to fill in the bass you took out of the 4x10's, conceivably the 4x10's could better maintain their tonality at high levels since the amp's not dealing with quite as much power robbing bass, of course the lows a 4x10 produce usually outperform single 15 cabs. Perhaps putting both 4x10's together under a common amp (that's able to run 2 ohms if needed) and then use the other amp to drive a sealed 2x12 guitar type cab, the combination of eight 10" speakers offers quite a punch while a growly 2x12 might top the rig off well
