I broke my amp!

Hello everyone!

I showed up to a rehearsal setting up my amp and cab - a Mesa Boogie Subway D800+ connected to a RevSound 210. As I was taking the Mesa out of its amp bag, it fell off the cab and landed face first on a carpeted floor. I continued the set up and turned it on, and what came out of my amp was a loud hum that sounded like a car stuck in a high gear. I used my back up Eden WXT 500 for rehearsal with no issues, so I assume the hum does not have to do with the cab.

When I got home, I plugged the Mesa back in and recorded the hum. After I plugged the bass in and, with the input set to 8:00 and master set to 9:00, I got nothing but distortion when I tried to play, and the output was variable. Unplugging the amp from the cab, I then plugged headphones into the headphone jack and tried playing - the same distortion occurred through the headphones.

@agedhorse or anyone else - any idea what I did? I’ll be checking in with the music store I bought the amp from (they are sort of local) and I assume it will be going to a tech, but if someone could give me a ball park of what is wrong and how much it will cost to repair, I would be grateful.

Thanks,

kevorargh

Hard impact to the knobs can damage the insides of some pots, though from pictures I've seen, I'd expect the Mesa amp to be pretty rugged. Switches too.

A happy ending would be some connector working loose inside, combined with replacement of the damaged pots, but both are jobs for a good tech. Pot replacement can do collateral damage to the circuit board if not done with skill and access to the correct parts.

Trying to guess any further, with the designer watching, is kind of like trying to make up chords to a tune with the composer sitting there. ;)

Bummer.

I can always repair this through my service shop, there's a flat rate charge for the repair, plus a little bit more if there's sheet metal damage that needs correcting. Message me and I will get you the necessary info.

We generally repair these at the factory or at my shop because most techs tend to make things worse, though depending on where you are located we may have a factory service center with a tech that's approved on the Subway amps.

Mine also fell off about 2 days ago but it was about 30 inch into a yoga foam block with a folded hand towel. I could have landed on a hardwood floor. The plastic buckle was not fastened on the bag that I stored it from . I was in denial did not want to find out until I saw this thread and all is good. This a Genz Benz amp that I sent to Andy last summer. I can attest to the fast turn around and if I were you even if the store will repair it for free, I'd spend the $ to have him repair it. You'll get it faster and it will be repaired fully

Definitely go this route, you won’t regret it!

Update for you all - I sent my amp to @agedhorse and, of course, it got lost for a bit in the USPS chasm of mail service. Luckily, it was found, and aged horse was able to repair it - it's embarrassing how much damage I did it (3 broken pots, 1 cracked knob, bent steel plate). Agedhorse also gave hot a factory update, and I received it last week. I finally got a chance to spend some time with again, and it sounds like a brand new amp!

Again, many thanks @agedhorse!

Good decision. If I ever have a problem with my WD800 or Streamliner, I ain't messing around, off to Andy it goes. Hopefully that won't happen though.

One more update for no good reason/work is exceptionally boring today and I have nothing better to do with my time!

I took the rig out to the Hoot Nite I regularly attend - something I rarely do (the load-in is down a flight of stairs that are bit...worn)!

First off, I was able to set up my rig without breaking the amp. Huzzah!

Secondly, I was able to get my usual tone - lots of chunk from the tube Pre-Amp I use!

Lastly, I got it out of the Pub and into the car and back into the house without breaking anything. Huzzah!

Thanks!

kevorargh!

Andy's work is second to none and that goes double when he's working on something he designed!

If Andy is willing to do it, there is no better choice. On top of which he is fast and very reasonably priced especially given his knowledge, skill and experience.

You are very lucky you could get it to the guy who knows this amp inside out.

I had the same sort of issue with an SWR and although the guys I used did ok, it took me 2 efforts....and I don't blame them, they were working things out on the fly.

I'm not surprised at the damage this did which proves the best option was the one you took. Imo.
