After years of not being allowed to, or being heavily discouraged from playing my bass in the house my wife told me I should play my instrument. Here’s the kicker, it has to be in the living room while she is in there watching television. No amp. No thanks. Everything will get donated to the local high school that has a great music department in September when school starts. Anybody else been pushed away from playing by a significant other?

No, but I've pushed away significant others by playing. The playing stays, sorry, non-negotiable.
I became single last year for a similar reason. In that house, my recording studio was in the basement, but I had to use headphones and Mesa Cab Clones instead of mic-ing an amp. This allowed her to watch her favorite female-oriented TV shows (that I totally disliked).
The solution was a divorce. Now, I can do whatever I want musically and otherwise, whenever I want to. A future marriage will never happen unless the new wife is also a musician. The house that I bought when I moved back to Georgia (from Kansas City) doesn't have a basement, so my studio is now located in what originally was the Dining Room. A typical wife would never allow this.

i've had one of those: she was 'classical', i was "jazz'....wasn't a great mix!

)for musicians: a spouse/partner that appreciates (via respect) the passion and the work it takes to play music is really all that's necessary. they don't need to be fans or even supporters of your efforts --- but a lack of respect will certainly kill the buzz.

Kids out in next couple of years. I will probably bail then. Getting some new golf clubs on the sly in the fall. Retiring next year. Hoping to play golf three to six days a week then. Right now I play three or four times from April to October.

Help is available for abused spouses, be they male or female.
Does your wife allow you to go to the doctor by yourself? Do you have access to money?
My wife doesn't like it when I play my electric bass unplugged in the house. Too bad for her.
If you have access to the money, maybe rent a space to play/jam at.
She loves complaining. Maybe I will ask if she can do it a little less.

I sympathize. I quit music after being worked on by loved ones. Not standing up for myself was the biggest mistake I ever made. And I've made a lot of mistakes.
