I can't know if I will be available.

@OP -- As I read more and more on this thread, the more disgusted and angry I get with you. You ask for advice - we give it to you - you continuously argue with us on that and refuse to take responsibility for your own problems.

I don't think you are a good fit for that band and you definately fall into the category of that narcistic bandleader PoC.

Despite a lot of grandeur you're desperately wanting to show off, you are unable to make a decision for yourself or for your band, yet you act like the next pompuous I-know-it-all bandleader coming 'round the corner.

I second a lot of the sentiments already written down here. My advice (again) would be the following, in (no) particular order.

- take the bloody holiday and make a decision to watch your "bandmates" do the gig or not.
- let the sub do the gig
- quit that band
- think long and hard on your actions and the way you act towards other people
- define priorities - work, music, family, anything goes...
- establish your own band with people that will follow you, that will put up with your shenanigans, quircks, indecisiveness... Don't get desillusionned on this because you will get into loads of fights, arguments, discussions and you're not going to be able to keep bandmembers.

For the rest, peace out and mods, please close the thread.

I think like a few here you are just using the thread to vent your personal life frustrations.

The initial question is simple, and some said they have seen it sorted like that, with the sub paid and original member playing, and that eveything went fine.

Even if it's not solved this way most of the time, hearing this is not an abberation remains valuable information.

The personal attacks and judgements that you are throwing here are just unnecessary.

I saved that band from BL firing the singer and managed to make him take the singer back, for this kind of availability issues related to work and sickness.
I wouldn't just follow BL or collective decisions blindly, if they seem irrational and driven by frustration.

A gig had to be rescheduled Thursday next week.
However my professional situation makes it that i don't know if i will have to take Holliday's or have to work (regular job)
If i have to take holliday, I will not stay in town a whole week just for one gig, or even 2 or 3, whatever i don't need the little money we get through that, I need Holliday's.

Some insisted that I had to say of yes or no I will be there, but I say I can't know yet.
Booking a sub is the logical thing to do since they don't want to refuse the gig, and use a sub paid 100€. ( While we make 300€ for the whole band )

They did the same last week for the day of music, I was slamming at a music festival, and I said I couldn't be there since a long time, i had the tickets since 3 years because COVID, and play with them for 6 months now.

They were not entirely satisfied with the sub, he learned half the song right, so they want to rehearse with him Wednesday next week.

So I suggested that if I know I will be there, in the end, like even the day of the show, we just can give the 100 euro to the guy for learning the songs and losing a booked night, while I get to play with my band.

Because if I am available finally, why would someone play in my place ?

I think I was transparent, to describe the situation, and it seems to me more honest than bailing at the last moment.

But I got no answer from that suggestion.

What do you think ?

To me, when they hired the sub, you lost rights to the gig. It's really that simple. There is nothing wrong with asking if the sub wants to sit out and still get paid, but they are within their full right to deny that request. With that said, if this were my band i would handle hiring of my own sub and then have control in a situation like this. You could simply contact the sub and ask if he wants to sit out and still get paid. If he says yes, you are golden.

Update, the singer got covid.

She will not play Friday, so tomorrow, and was subbed already for Saturday because she said she didn't to play two days in a row. After it was booked.

And for that gig next thursday that this thread is about, she said she will test a day prior to the show.

Therefore it's the same situation of uncertainty regarding the sub.

Sub will be taking 100€ for each show, that's 300€, which is about what the whole band get for one show.
Plus the 100€ of my sub.
I think someone will get mad :D

Great suggestion, I didn't think about that.

If you dont know...tell them no.
But....dont be that guy or band who books a sub...therefore stopping them taking other work, and then standing them down at the last minute because you can then make it.
Thats rubbish behaviour too, imv.

No, not at all. Your singer is being responsible. Your situation is your own selfishness.

I can't even imagine the mental gymnastics involved in equating the stubborn unwillingness to let go of a potential show with the responsible actions of someone who is taking care of herself and others.

The uncertainty was never the point.

Mental Gymnastics is quite common these days it seems.;) Nice band name too.:)

Risking wasting 5 days of your limited amount of paid vacations to a 2h unpaid gig is too much of an unbalanced choice to be considered a choice.

This can't be selfishness anymore when an individual is losing way more than what the whole band would be losing.

Otherwise it's the band that becomes selfish, or more like band members hiding their own selfishness behind the band interest argument.

When there is so little income involved, this makes no sense.

A sub gig is not just pay for the gig unless full charts are provided.
This means they will have spent a lot of time working on things.
That's why one off Subs are a pita...so unless the songs learnt carry into other gigs, it is also too much work for the money.
Thats also why when you book them, you do right by them. Assuming they hold up their end by killing the gig...

I consider allowing other band members to have vacations as taking care of others.

I don't think you can get too much credit for respecting the quarantine law, and she is slightly breaking it by one day. ( 1500€ fine)

Showing you want to play if the choice is reasonable, cannot be as detrimental as you say it is.
That is if you are reasonable yourself.

That killing the gig didn't happened so far, either for the sub bass player, and for the sub singer that we rehearsed with yesterday for tonight and tomorrow.

For that amount, we are "discovering" what we can get.
That's fine by me.

You keep missing the point. Take your vacation, but now that you have hired a sub, let them do their job. Why is this so difficult?

So we had 2 shows and had to spend 100x2 for sub sing and 100x1 for sub trumpet.

For the next show, when BL knew I was available, he wanted to still go with sub bass, by principle and respect for the sub, I guess, but then I he found that we spent to much on subs, so he decided to cancel sub bass, by money principle this time i guess.

Yesterday we learned that the show of thursday was canceled by the venue, after having it canceled once already, because they were afraid of the competition of another event.

So this was all for nothing.:wacky:
Can't imagine if I blew holidays for this.

Thanks for the inputs, professional or amateur.
