I put a Nordy Mustang pickup under the covers on my short scale bass, along with a Seymour Duncan stack J-neck (bar instead of individual poles) as a bridge pickup to balance. The Nordy has a little more wire and dual poles per string, so the pickup is a hybrid between a P and a Mustang. Great, big, round, tone. And make sure you put a set of GHS Balanced Nickels on it; God's gift to short scale bass players, as I have posted many times their attributes in other threads.

I'm interested in the GHS Balanced Nickels for short scale. Why do you like them for 30"?

Nickel is more dense than NPS. So it has more mass for the same diameter. This means more tension. They don't flop. They retain great stability in both tuning and intonation. As the name implies, they are more consistent string-to-string and up the neck in both feel and tone. They have a big, round, tone. They don't twang. The E string doesn't thump. They are reasonably priced. Good longetivity: I put a set on my 30-inch scale bass and it lasted through two annual week-long trips with my party band to Mexico. As they age, they take on some of the woody, organic character that would have been part of the tonal signature of the original Mustang basses. For example, one song my band played in Mexico is the Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter. With my setup, I have a video that it absolutely copped the Bill Wyman tone when he was onstage with a Mustang. I can't post it because it is embedded in a private group that I can't extract.

I bought a Mexican PJ model recently and love it. I initially chose it because I’m healing from a broken left wrist and the shorter scale was much easier to play. At first it felt almost like playing a toy, but man that thing is a little beast! A blast to play and and nice, thick sounding tone!
