Heres a follow up, for kicks one night, i desided to try this little eraser pick thing, and GUESS WHAT!.....IT SUCKED! ugh, im never useing anything other than a pick. o ya, everone thinks i was being sarcastic. but i would REALL like a shirt....come on, just one.

thats just dirty, i love it! this thread got off the point REALLY faster. faster than usual, actually. i've never tried foreign objects as a pick, gonna have to do that.

but, on an other note, slap broke me free from my pick only cage. i finally grasped the concept of it, and it all makes sense now. so, im bringing the skill back to the ol' right fingers again. still cant do the same volume as a pick with em, though.

I've played my bass in some pretty unusual ways in the past.

When I started out I played with a pick all the time, until I migrated to using fingers a few years later. When playing live, on the odd occasion the pick would slip from my fingers, so what I used to do was hold the top part of my index finger between middle finger and thumb and play my index finger like a pick.

Best of both worlds. A good fleshy tone with the playing style of a pick. Mind you it didn't do my nails much good.

I happy to say that now I mostly play with a regular 3 finger picking technique so I don't have to resort to such desparate measures!

If people didn't experiment we probably wouldn't have the slapping technique.

This is exactly what I still do if I want to have a "pick" sound - I hit the string with the nail of my index finger using the same technique described above.
