Dr. Cheese, I am into my second year of teaching myself how to play the bass. I am using the Beatles as my learning foundation for two reasons. Having grown up with them (I was 10 when I got to see them on Ed Sullivan) their music is pretty ingrained in me. Paul's bass lines were pretty basic in the beginning of his career and lays a good foundation for learning the bass. As I progress in my learning I will be hitting the Motown hits and hopefully on to more current songs as time goes. That is the music that I know from heart, so that is an advantage, in my mind, in helping me with things like keeping the proper beat. A metronome helps, but the beat is already in my head.
I would think that what you are doing is exactly what I would do, and I appreciate your honesty and passion in the messages you post on this board. I find your posts inspiring.
