you've seen my fiascos all along the front page every other day or so, but i've finally found a few options that aren't totally doomed to fail. there are two:
one, as per a recommendation by someone who will always know more about speaker and cabinet interaction than i ever will, put two legend bp eminence speakers inside a small 2x12 bassman cabinet, get a mojotone bassman head kit and be satisfied with spending ~1200 bucks on a small, good sounding amp set up that looks great and would serve well, and will also be a good learning experience building amplifiers and setting up cabinets.
the second option, which came to me recently, is to utilize a website called "fliptops.net" and purchase a cabinet from them, free of any chance of failure, and find a good, powerful little class d amp head to either put on the top of the cabinet or to somehow find a way to hide in the cabinet, almost like a hidden amp combo. i'm thinking of taking a 200 watt svt mini head, taking off the grill cloth and corner chrome pieces, and just retrofitting all that stuff with items from fliptops.net (only would cost about 20 bucks) so i can end up with a matching cab and mini head for about ~1000 or less bucks.

Both seem like fun projects. And you should wind up with reliable setups (assuming all of the physics works out with the cabs and drivers).

a question for anyone: how powerful are the 200 watts in that svt micro head? and would it be any more capable than the 50 tube watts i'd get from the bassman idea? the speaker that 200 watts would go into would be a 15 inch 4 ohm speaker.

One watt is no more and no less powerful than another watt. All watts are created equal.

What matters is the method used to measure and rate the output power. Those are not equal.

Be sure you use the BP-122 and not the 102, they are different drivers.

hmm… either the diamond check pattern single baffle 15, or the 70s style 15. 70s style would go well with the svt micro, and be cheaper, but if i choose another head it may end up as a strange combination. diamond check pattern seems more iconic and standard, while also being sort of hard to make a classy match between a head. call me insane, but i think i'd put the fliptop websites' blue grill cloth on the svt micro (all 4 square inches!!!) because i know that it would bug me to no end having mismatched grill cloth colors.

I've had nothing but good dealings with Fliptops.net. It can seem expensive, but in reality, no one else supports old Ampeg projects like Bruce. So it would be "worth it" as far as that goes.

considering they'll give you a whole cab with a speaker ready to go (something i haven't been dealing with in my pursuits of a bass cabinet so it feels like the greatest deal in the world) i'd say it's a pretty good price. i think the most outrageous pricing i've ever seen on amplifiers was from "benson". i saw their amps, though "wow those look nice!" and then there's a 2x12 for like 1500 bucks.

One watt is no more and no less powerful than another watt. All watts are created equal.

What matters is the method used to measure and rate the output power. Those are not equal.

Delivery method matters as well. It's easy to find an explanation here and online of how tube and SS amps (A/B, D, etc.) differ in how they manage a reactive load (a speaker).

Just like horsepower, it depends on your needs whether you want that delivered via a straight six in a Peterbuilt or a v8 in a Corvette.

A watt is a watt. How loud a watt gets depends on the efficiency of the speaker you've built for it.
