I Got Ripped

About 10 years ago, a friend gave me an old tube amp that was "taking up space" in his house, because he knew I played a little guitar, and he wanted it out of his way.
Well, I only played a little guitar, so it mostly sat in my house.
One day, I decided to see how much I could sell it for, since I had only used it a handful of times. I took it to a resale music store, and they offered me $400 for it. I couldn't believe my luck. It was old, and kind of beat-up, so I said, "yes", and couldn't wait to get out of there and go drinkin', or whatever it was I was doing at the time.
This was the amp:

Now that I know what it was, D'oh!:crying:

Oh well, at least it didn't cost me anything.

You got "rippped"? How? Did they put a gun to your head and force you to sell it to them? Did you do any research to find out what you had and what it was worth? Look, you got $400 for nothing, that's getting ripped off at all.

Sure, you could have sold it for more, but only if you'd known what it was worth, and took the time to market it to people. It was a bum deal, but the resale store didn't mis-represent anything, so they didn't rip you off. If anyting, you ripped yourself off.

I've sold things without doing much research and discovered what a doofus I was later, I'm pretty sure everyone does at some point or another. It takes real guts/stupidity to spill the beans about it among "experts" though. I'll let others decide which category they think you fall into......

Well, it might take another $400 to retube and recap it to bring it up to its full potential. And another couple of hundred to rebuild or replace a 30+ year old speaker.

You can slice it a few different ways but to get the money you see these going for, you would need to put a few bucks into it.

um, why relax? Like Rich points out, the perjoritave nature of suggesting he got "ripped" puts the onus on the person who bought it, not on the person who sold it. "Ripped off" to me means that someone else cheated me. And given that we don't know the condition of the amp he sold, when he sold it, and what negotiations took place, I find the OP to be the one who probably needs to "relax".

learn something, and now that
I'm into bass, I wish I had it back,
rather than had the money then.
Just a little story/fable to pass
the time.
I'm pretty "relaxed" about it.
