I guess I'm officially a bass player

I got the SX BG2K LPB Bass Guitar and Amp Package for Christmas. It came yesterday; I was allowed to open it and set it up. I tuned it and played a few riffs from Come Together.

The color is actually a deeper metallic blue.

I have a long way to go to become proficient; I feel like Dorothy when she first stepped onto the Yellow Brick Road.

You are good to have picked an electric.

All ABGs (Acoustic Bass Guitars) I have seen include a pickup - they are worthless without one. Only a couple pricey oversized models have enough volume to compete with an acoustic guitar.

The piezo wire pickup used in alot of the lower end ABG's is finicky and makes it difficult to achieve a smooth response accross strings. They also pick up alot of string clack which doesn't sound very good in the mix with a rhythm acoustic guitar player IMO.

A p-bass or jazz neck pup with flatwounds can get pretty close tone-wise, and will often sound better in a mix. Of course this is my opinion, and watching Esperanza Spalding play one will make you contradict my opinion, but I still believe ABG, as it is today, is a flawed niche instrument..

I was told somewhere by someone that the feel and handling of an aeb and electric bass are very different because of the volume differences. The person said that because of the lower volume of an a/e bass, you play harder and get used to that.

The first a/e bass I looked at was the Ibanez AEB10. The owner of a local music shop said Ibanez is not what it once was, especially when it came to a/e bass. All in all he also discouraged me from a/e bass.

I think it was this site (I've been a member for a short while, and mostly lurking ) where a few members spoke highly of SX. That's what clinched it for me.

Congrats, you'll have fun with the bass (admittedly coming from someone who plays more guitar than bass these days...)!

Thanks. I have a lot to learn on both instruments, and my fear (which is actually too strong a word) is that I've bitten off more than I can chew. You know... the cannot-serve-two-masters thing. I wish I could hit a lottery, quit my job, and stay home all day playing guitar and bass, going back to the gym and playing with my animals (2 birds, 2 dogs and 1 ferret... I don't think I missed anyone ).
