i hate supplied backlines

Doent really matter what you like.. your amp is all you need to worry about for your monitoring. The final house mix is where it is at..
The 52 actually works well in the house mix for the overall tone of the bass and balance with other instruments in the house..

Depends on your bass sound. The 52 appears to have a gigantic hole right where most of my sound is. So probably wouldn't be suitable for me.

When recording, I've usually used an SM57.

I had a very good production coach suggest a few things.

"nobody is paying for your tone"

"deal with it"

"create workable options"

"The band mix sound is set from mid room -- not from your head up your @$$... I have a list of 500 people that want your job"

--------

There were some sage points about a quality DI and IEM..... for about $200 you can gain some of your control back.... and create options

I am with the others that keep a Sansamp DI in there bag. It can fix any crapola backline amp. I always bring it to jam sessions so I don't have to worry about what quality of equipment is on stage. Also, I don't have to mess up the host bassists EQ which always bothers me.

I'm about split on good and bad supplied backlines. First one was a jazz gig with a GK something or other head (I forget the cabs). Totally awful. Pretty much made me hate everything GK. Next was an Eden stack which I liked a lot. The most recent was another GK head with a hartke stack which sounded phenomenal! Redeemed GK in my eyes. The most hilarious one was when my band played Blues Alley. I asked everyone if they would supply a rig and everyone said yeah and that I shouldn't worry about it. I figured, that with the place's reputation they should have something half decent, right? Wrong. they had a teeny little 15 watt GK thing that couldn't pump out enough volume for me to play over the piano, lol. Luckily, my folks were able to get my amp there just in time for the show.
