So i want to dabble in the guitar octave, but I dislike the string spacing guitars have which is why I chose bass to play. Maybe I would enjoy playing a piccolo tuned 6 string? I think it would be fun to have one tuned B to C

Rondo music has an affordable short scale 6 string bass if you want to keep closer to the guitar timbre.
But yes, perverse indeed. I say carry on! Could be good honest fun if nothing else.

They say rules are made to get broken- roles are made to be ignored. Check out Brian Bromberg on piccolo bass or Julie Slick on baritone guitar/bass VI for interesting non-standard takes on bass played in higher register formats.
Have heard piccolo bass playing that was an absolute treat. You don't need permission, you need to just get on with it.
I play a high-pitch 6 string. No need for it to be short scale.
You should follow your desire.
You can use bass strings for the lower 3 wound strings.
For the plain steel strings, try to get hold of D'Addario 'loop end', they are extremely long, and cheap, but you will need to improvise ball-ends for them: i use 'M6 (6mm) grub screws' in 5mm length, they screw into the loop and stay there.
You should follow your desire.

on a 6 you could probably tune EADGCF and be happy.
I had a 7 string before and the higher tuning I used on it was BEADGCF. I've been thinking about getting a nicer one made. The high f was plenty high enough for me.
that's pretty darn high and if I remember right none of that even went above the 12th fret.
Get one. I'm a Hobbit, so a 6 string bass neck is too much for me. I'm trying to get used to the guitar spacing on my 30" 6 string. I was surprised at the quality, it was a B-stock from Rondo but it's hard to find a flaw and workmanship is great.

Not too put too fine a point on it, but what Julie plays is a Bass VI, not a baritone guitar. It's designed to be tuned E-e like a guitar, but a full octave lower.
Whatever you call it though, I think the stuff she's doing with it (and an assortment of electronics) in her two-bass band EchoTest is revolutionary. She often plays it like a guitar, with Marco Machera holding down the bottom end on his 5-string, but frequently he'll go high and she'll go low.
Should they still be called basses if they are tuned in the "guitar" register?

I'd take a piccolo 6 over a bass VI. As long as the piccolo is tuned with the same intervals as a regular bass.
I can't get with bass VI that is tuned like a regular guitar.
