I have long hair.

I'd say hair length is not an issue for gigs IMHO.
Facial hair yes, when I look at all the acts now everyone seems to be clean shaven.
Wedding/party bands are looks concsious and most are clean shaven.
But hey, you're a musician not a CEO.

As Band Leader, it's his right to set the rules for his band. It's also your right to refuse and let the chips fall where they may. It's not like you are wearing shorts, sunglasses or going shirtless! :D

I turned down a gig in the 70's (think disco, John Travolta, helmet hair) because they wanted me to get a hair cut. 35 years later I'm still glad I did it.

I'll join your band Dewey and I don't care how you wear your hair. You ROCK! :bassist:

Back in the late 60s early 70s a good friend of mine turned down a gig he auditioned for in the "city" because they wanted him to wear make up.

Anyone want to take a guess what band it was.I'm pretty sure he's regretted his decline.

OP:

I think your hair looks fine. To be honest, I wish I had a healthy head of hair like that.

Based on your pic, it looks like you keep your hair nice and clean and neat. I have seen some guys with long stringy unclean "DUDE" hair that makes them look like a burned-out lowlife. Yours doesn't look like that at all.

And I will share one other comment with you, my healthy haired friend. If anyone ever told me to change my hair length, I would simply point in the direction of the nearest beach where the commenter can pound sand all day long.

Man, don't listen to what anybody says about your hair or anything else... I'm 44 and my hair is literally halfway down my back. There are still people who think that when you reach a "certain age" you should start to conform to what society expects of you and become a drone like everyone else... This has more to do with them than you.

I even know some people who act surprised when I tell them about whatever band or musical project I happen to be engaged in at the time. They say things like "You're still playing music?? I would have thought you'd have given up on that by now..."

Given up??

Like music is just a means to an end, and if you're not touring the world or playing in the Tonight Show band by the time you're 30, then you should put all that "foolishness" behind you and sell all your gear, buy a rocking chair and take up a more "sensible" passtime - like scrimshaw or stamp collecting - while you wait to die.

These people don't understand what life is about. They gave up on their own passion years ago and are resentful of those who won't abandon theirs...

However, I digress...

Life is too short to worry about what other people think of your hair, your clothes, the kind of car you drive (whether you wear sunglasses on stage ;)) or any other meaningless criteria. If they don't like it, it's their problem, not yours.

[Edit] BTW, no offense intended to anyone who enjoys scrimshaw or stamp collecting.... Or wearing sunglasses on stage.

I agree with Mossmatic's post. I'm 49-tall, very slim and clean shaven. And I have long, thick, wavy blond hair to mid back maybe. Its all mine, I don't color it or curl it or anything. I'm proud of it. You should see the look of shock on some people when I turn around after they have just addressed me as ma'am.

I'm 27 and cut my hair a few years ago. It was a really hot summer and the hair was getting too heavy and dry. While I don't regret it I DO miss the extra stage presence it gave me... there's something inherently badass about a bass player rocking out with a foot and a half of bangs flailing around his face. And now that my hairline's receding I miss it more than ever.
