I just don't understand Pink Floyd

I love Pink Floyd listening to their music takes me back. I love all music I throw out all of the genre stuff I like to do back stories on the music I listen to and if you research the making of " The Wall" it's pretty fascinating.

I dunno, I like Pink Floyd, but I was never the fan my friends were. Many great songs and a great sound. I recently got to see The Wall tour and it was amazing visually and musically, but I haven't purchased any more PF or Roger Waters music nor did I buy a T shirt.

Hmm, as others have said, never considered them prog, not for a second. Atmospheric, headphone candy is more like. I guess it's "stuff to trip to", but I don't and still find it compelling and emotionally rewarding listen.

To each their own, of course.

Prog fans who favor King Crimson, ELP, GG, etc. tend not to like Floyd much or at all, IME.

oh, i don't know...now, yes, i think King Crimson is the end all and be all of progressive music. Robert Fripp is one of the kings of guitar players, and when they added bruford just put them over the top (not that i don't like all the albums that led up to Lark's Tongues in Aspic, because i really do)

but i don't think of Pink Floyd in the same way. KC was musical virtuosos playing virtuoso music. Pink Floyd was good musicians playing real innovative stuff.

Now, also granted, PF never made an album after Dark Side of the Moon....I don't know how they did it, but am convinced that demons took over their bodies and put out all the later crap....that is the only way to explain it....BUT Meddle & DSOTM were truly fantastic albums.

Two words:

Lyrical content. Especially when Roger Waters really gears up the angst.

Pretty good musicians too. And great studio technicians. I think for me it's the combination, a unique and complimentary marriage of often profound lyrical and poetic content with atmospheric and pertinent music. Not an easy recipe to cook up in a convincing and authentic way.

And I don't think Pink Floyd is so much stoner music. In fact, I think most of their music and lyrics focus on the human condition and flaws of the psyche independant of any chemical influence. We all lose a marble once in awhile. We all get moody, we all get greedy, or we surely have met people who do. Lots of flawed and colorful characters pop up in Floyd lyrics.

I liken a lot of Floyd to a great movie soundtrack. It paints vivid images in my mind (again, independant of chemical influence).

Would I listen to it during a workout? When I wanted something high-energy to get my yah-yahs out? Is it "party music?" No. It's something entirely different.

Pink Floyd IMO is more of a "life style" if you will. Like others have said, it is a mind set type thing. I personally love Floyd, that being said, I got into them via "recreational situations":ninja: There music is more of a show than anything, very theatrical, tells a story. Oh yeah, do the Wizard of Oz thing and you will probably hate it more than you already do.:hiding:

I'm prepping the internet bunker as we speak...

I was just wondering the insight as to why people enjoy this stuff. This might sound a little insulting, but I guess it just boils down to the fact that I prefer music that has life and energy to it no matter if it's a positive or negative 'energy'. Pink Floyd is not one of those bands. I'm also bored by most Radiohead stuff except 'The Bends.' Very similar with the textural layers and such. I respect Pink Floyd enough for being the force they are though, even if I just can't listen to it, so don't shoot! :hiding:
