Whenever I get sick (early signs of flu, a cold, general ague) I go to bed. My body will then dictate the sleep it needs (often a lot), and usually everything is fine in a day or so.
Some people just need that.
I usually get somewhere between 6 and 7 hours a night - and wake about the same time every morning without an alarm. With any sign of stress/illness that can become 18 hours with ease.
If you're not making a habit of it, don't worry. It's your body telling you to sleep.

Old joke: "I haven't slept for five days....because that would be too long."
When I start getting a bug, I can't think. That's the first symptom. Being frustrated by inability to concentrate on things and making dumb little mistakes drives me crazy. Then I start to feel bad and it all makes sense. Nope, not turning into an idiot permanently, just until the bug incubates for a while. Then I feel like crap for a few days, sleep a lot, and then start to feel better. About then is when I start to sound really awful. If it would all hit at once and be done with it, it sure would be more convenient.

Getting up at about 5:30 am is what happens no matter what. It's when I just say to heck with it and crawl off to bed that varies. I felt crummy yesterday, which meant 9 pm. That's just about the earliest I ever get to bed. Being slightly hyper has its advantages at times.

I wish that I could sleep longer than two hours at a time. Sometimes I'll get lucky and make it to three hours, sometimes only an hour. It depends. See, that's what it's like to live with an enlarged prostate. As soon as I get deep, dang if it doesn't wake me up to have to go to the john. Sometimes I'll just stay up awhile. Sleep two, awake two. It goes like that 24/7. At least I'm retired, so it doesn't cause problems with a job.

I have to admit, when I woke up I almost blew the back out of the toilet.

Do not go gentle into that good night

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Dylan Thomas

Yesterday I wasn't feeling 100%. I had no fever. No major stomach issues. No "symptoms" to speak of other than tired.

I had gotten my usual 6 hours +/- of sleep the night before.

But about 1:00 p.m. I hit the wall. I went from tired to exhausted. I powered through the rest of my work day, which included a 40 minute drive back to my office.

I usually get my kids around 4:40. But I had made it back to my office at 3:15. I texted my wife that I was ducking out a little early to grab a power nap, and asked if she could grab the kids. She agreed.

I got home and parked my truck about halfway down my almost 100 yard driveway. (I don't even remember that part.)

I went upstairs and got in bed (still dressed) at around 4:00 p.m. and DID NOT MOVE until my alarm went off at 5:20 a.m.

Today I feel fine.

My wife said she checked my temp a couple times while I was sleeping before she went to bed. Temp was fine.

It was the strangest thing.

I am that guy who can mentally power through even when I'm ridiculously tired. As long as I'm moving I can go all night. I recently worked 36 hours straight with a few breaks (and only two meals) to get a project over the finish line. (Edit for clarification: By "recently" I mean early December.... not recent enough to have any bearing here.)

I'm worried.

I feel fine. Blood pressure is fine. Temp is fine. Not short of breath. Nothing hurts.

But I hit a wall yesterday afternoon (under otherwise "normal" conditions) like I haven't in my entire life.

I guess I'm just bouncing it off you guys. I certainly wouldn't come to you goofballs for medical advice. :D

It was just weird.

By the way, last night was a really busy night with homework and volleyball practice. So bonus points to Mrs.Fingers for giving me the night off. Love that woman....

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! How long does this last??

I don’t sleep much either, but i don’t ever catch up unless i go long periods with no sleep. I can go a couple days with no sleep, then a nice shower is good for another 24. After that 90 minute naps can get me through a few more days before i hit the wall, then at least 10~12 hours sleep to catch up.

I wish I could do that, sleep for 13 hours uninterrupted. What's you're secret? If I were your main physician I would ask you: "How's your sex life?"

I'm worried.
only be worried that you've made it this far and that has only happened to you once. Believe me, I'm a doctor.

Srsly though, this happens to me at least once a year. Sometimes within a week of having had a totally sleepless night, sometimes not.
