I have to disagree with you on this.
If he doesn't know how to practice properly it is just wasting time.

Perfect practice makes perfect.

Find a mentor / teacher / guide.

Learn NEW stuff all the time rather than playing stuff you already know how to do. Playing stuff you already have down isn't really practicing - it's wanking. It's good to warm up with and fun to do but won't get you any further than you already are.
