Talent is knowing your capabilities and creating something great within them. You are not more talented because you can play a 7,8,9,1000 string bass, you are not more talented because you can slap and tap like your fingers are Gene Kelly dancing. I personally can't play anything over five strings, and actually only own 4. I can slap and tap passibly, but really never use those techniques at all. I wouldn't call myself talentless.

Honestly, I still don't get why people worship Jaco. To MY EARS its all crap. Same with Jonas Helborg. But that is me. I watch a ton of Jaco stuff on YouTube trying to find that magic nugget of sound and still find it amazing that people think some of his random banging and harmonics is all that great. If I edited it down some I am sure a lot of people would wonder if he's even playing music.

Having said that, Gene is very good at what he does. The basslines in Kiss songs work, and some of them are very, very memorable. No one can deny that when you first here the bass in "Calling Dr. Love" you know exactly what song is coming and can hear the bassline in your head.

The OP may be a little over the top in his exuberance for Gene, but Gene is probably a better bassist then most of us here, and he's been playing it for a lot longer then many of us as well.

Couldn't agree more. Look being a great bassist doesn't mean you will have a great band. I might $iss off some bassist's here but hey we are the foundation of the band not the finish and the trim..that's for guitarists and vocals..sorry do your job! If you want to be seen play the damn guitar or be a lead singer or do both!

I agree also on Jaco yes talented but is it really all that musical? Is any bass solo really all that musical IMO No.

Gene lays down simple grooves in a hard rock band..not rocket science or is it in AC/DC, Poison on and on.
He has perform for years and has done it night after night now over 60..could you? I know allot of people here think he is an ass and at time he is. I doubt he cares and is doing well last we all checked. I know I couldn't of done what he has in the years he has performed with one of the biggest rock bands in the world..or could 95% of you. The issue is most of you know this and or wont admit it.

I think Gene does a good job playing for the song. Sometimes you don't need to be a monster on the Fretboard for every song. You keep it simple and then when you do have a chance to shine it sticks out better,

I just finished playing all 6 of their first cds.Man i get a rush of flash backs of when i was younger with girls all around.Listening to` I Want You` or `Baby Driver`....
They really do have some great songs like `Love Her All I Can` & `Strange Ways.Genes playing follows alot of the guitar work but will pop out when he does fills & its all done on purpose. Its hard to play & sing at the same time.I cant do it, i tried !
You gotta give him credit.I just saw a clip on YT from a Marylands concert i think `from this thread` where Paul is losing his voice & i read that some people wanted thier money back cause of Pauls shocking voice, i mean come`on the guys are over 60 aint he ?
At least they are up on stage trying to entertain us & not just sitting at home sucking up royalties with their feet up !

i dont care if he is an arse, techneque wise he may not be a victor wooten cliff burton or ray brown but he wrote some great songs and thats more important than how demanding the song is to play. as far as him being greedy, i dont care as long as he treats his fans right (which he probebly dosent) but ide put my band logo on anything i could sell to if people would buy it. suing everybody is a different story though that was scummy when he sued king diamond over makeup (i love king diamond) but ive done worse for a buck and will again probebly.

What about a Punisher to go with that burger ? Thats a mean looking bass.Id rather have that then the new Cort Axe anyday of the week........including Sundays.I dream of having one , i know people that have`em & just hang`em up on walls to look at...what a shame that is.Give it to me mate !
His solo album was just o.k a few good songs & thats it !

I like Kiss as a whole as well as Genes playing.

jpj is not only an amazing bassist but an amazing overall musician. gene on the other hand has never done anything that made me respect him as a bass player or song writter. can the man sell....yes but this isnt a business forum this is a bass forum so that shouldnt even come into play.

So, I jumped a few pages. Did we ever get a definition of what a "good" bass player is? does wanking off all over the fretboard make you great? Does just playing root notes make you bad? Somwhere in between make you awesome?

The interview with the lady sounds like he wants to have sex with himself rather than the lady speaking to him.He has everything worked out when it comes to women ah ?
But in the comic store when he was younger in full makeup he actaully sounds & talks like a human being.I quess that having that much money can make you an A-Hole !

Well, if they're amateurs or beginners. But at the pro level, or even the advanced hobbyist level, he's average at best. But it's cool. He's made a lot of people happy and that's something.
