When it comes to hair spinning in sync, he leaves Jaco and Berlin in the dust.

I don't know about anybody else experiences with that guy but I asked him some gear questions once and he was a total dick. Like he couldn't be bothered associating with anybody other than himself.

And OP there are plenty of people that were labelled as Jaco clones in the wake of Jaco, Marcus Miller being the biggest one that comes to mind. He has long shaken that label. Now mind you there is only Jaco in terms of composition.

Wasn't Mendoza's project called Straight Jacket or Straitjacket? Amazing band and great bass playing. Kai Eckhardt is another great player who I don't think gets enough love here on TB.

I found the Marcus Miller comparison interesting as I've heard mostly his slap stuff or at least not "finerstyle centric". Try as I might, slap bass just doesn't do it for me. Maybe his older stuff would be a good place to look?

McBride does a great job doin' a "Come On, Come Over"/"Barbary Coast" groove on "The Ballad of Little Girl Dancer" (from Vertical Vision); McBride covers "Havona" on his Sci-Fi album.

I personally don't agree with the comparison.

A young Marcus on fretless:

The Miles Davis electric-chromatic Funk albums with Marcus (We Want Miles & Star People)...+ the Brecker Bros. Straphanging album...closer to Jaco (maybe) than the highly-produced later Marcus albums.

I recall a Marcus interview from years back...sayin' how Jaco's debut album stayed on his turntable for about a year.
IIRC, "Continuum" was the tune that knocked him for a loop.
Too, Marcus (who was with Miles & elected to stay with Miles) came close to being Jaco's sucessor in WR.
I would say "compositionally"...there in the same league, too.
