Hey guys. I'm really getting into Jaco and loving the tone, style, and just about everything about his stuff (especially his self titled album). Can anyone recommend some similar bassists (yes, he was one of a kind but try your best) to check out? I'm not a big fan of slap but most other styles I dig. Thanks guys and gals!

I've been playing FL and almost as long as he - many people copied him as it was truly ground breaking but...
you might also like Michael Manring or Gary Willis
for my money the best 'living' bassist in the ilk of JP is Richard Bona - and he sings!

Jerry Jemmott, Mark Egan, Jeff Berlin, Richard Bona, Rocco Prestia, Gary Willis, Michael Manring, Alphonso Johnson, Victor Bailey, etc.
SO many aspects of Jaco: You like Donna Lee Jaco? Then Berlin, Egan etc.
Come on, Come Over, used to be a Cha Cha, groovin' Jaco: Rocco Prestia (where he got it from originally), Jerry Jemmott (also the influence for tunes like "Barbary Coast," etc.).
"Continuum and Portrait of Tracy" Jaco? Manring, Willis, others.
Basically anything beyond his solo album, everybody sounded exactly like him. But the ones listed; either they inspired his sound from the get go, or took his influence and did something a bit different (or very different, as they evolved themselves).

Good stuff on the new Chick Correa 'The Vigil' and his time with John McLaughlin - 'Floating Point' and 'Industrial Zen.'
I thought it interesting that I did not like his eponymous album, although it was in the spirit of the times. YMMV.
Manring was influenced by (and a student of) JP but he has moved far, far beyond mere emulation. His work on 'Equilibre' and with 'Demania' is amazing. I hate to gush but he's by far the most influential artist for me right now...

When it comes to hair spinning in sync, he leaves Jaco and Berlin in the dust.
I think there's some pretty serious crossover between Paul Jackson (Headhunters) and Jaco. Particularly on Herbie's album 'Secrets'. Came out the same year as Jaco's debut, and they stylistically similar at times.
If you like Jaco, buy his DVD and carefully work through it, using exactly his fingering. When I switched over to bass, I spent many many hours working on this book and the James Jamerson book.
I'm surprised this cat has not been mentioned here yet, and he almost 'out-jacos' Jaco himself !
