I LOVE spalted maple

I love spalted maple but how about spalted mango?

I chose the below top for an upcoming custom build. It looks a bit like spalted maple, but I like that it is a weirdly obscure top for a bass.

Please post the build in Luthiers Corner - we'd all love to see this beauty unfold!

I like wood - all kinds: oak, walnut, knotty pine, aspen...
I like the variations in grain, texture and color; as individual as fingerprints. The tonewoods used on expensive guitars are flat-out gorgeous, but the one that always gets my attention is spalted maple. Yes, I know it's partially rotted, and that the figuring is created by fungus, but still, I'm crazy about it. Am I nuts?

Nuts ? No you're not !!
Here is mine , Marceau Singlecut (31") 6 strings. This isn't a veneer but a 6mm top/back, it needed some work to stabilize it , Tom Marceau had a lot of work on this one , but the result is worth the job.

I own nothing of the exotic calibre currently, except in the past I had an original run, USA-made Peavey Rudy Sarzo signature model (my "great white buffalo"), had a gorgeous flamed maple 5-piece neck.. You might even consider it a 7-piece as the last 2 pieces are not really going the whole length of the neck... And it was HEAVY..

Anyways, my point is, you aren't nuts, and exotic woods give me wood ;) I love my maple.. But spalted Ash.. Mannnnn.. This thread is making me think of how bad I'd GAS over the older Elrick basses as a kid when I first started playing 17+ years ago.

Mark... rarely see spalted maple quite like this...quite stunning! Needs a clear pickguard to show off the rest of it! :) You let this one go??? :(
Yeah, I sold it. It was a great bass but I'm a 5 string player and it wasn't getting that much use. If it had been a 5'er, I'd definitely still have it!
