You're probably asking, what's a De-thumpilator?

It's something that will eliminate the thump that's heard and felt throughout our 2 bed apartment when I'm tapping my foot or heel when I practice. Something that I can rest my foot and tap on. Perhaps something wood with some kind of isolating material? Something I can tap on that will absorb the thudding.

Thoughts?

Ok, firstly, are you wearing heavy work boots?

Assuming no, how about some of those padded socks, and a heavy bath mat?
If that won't cut it, I'm sure there's pro sound engineers on here can suggest a better alternative, using acoustic foam or mineral wool.

Correct, no heavy boots, just barefoot or socks. I'll experiment with some bath mats. Maybe a thin buckwheat hull pillow...

The “no foot tapping” thing was thumped into me early in jr high and high school band and orchestra. Directors were particular about audiences not seeing kids tapping bunches of feet.
With that said move around your practice space and find the most solid floor. Probably near a load bearing wall and over a joist. Then with socks and your choice of padding - tap away.

I can’t tap my foot in time. But I can rock back in forth as a reasonable alternative.

Well I guess I would have to take exception to the very concept of de-Thumpilation.:smug:

Nevertheless, I suggest one of those “anti-fatigue” soft mats for your problem. I’m not really sure if they work for fatigue, but they should work for this.

I’d endorse the yoga mat, but it’s more real estate than you actually need. Anything soft and vibration-dampening should do the trick.

I often tap my foot if I’m working on a complicated rhythm. And it’s never bothered me to see a musician tap. As long as they swing, I don’t care. A symphony orchestra, now I can see how that could be distracting.
