I need a new bass, good for slap

For something in the $2000 and under category I really couldn't tell you.

I didn't say you couldn't find a good slap bass for under $2000, just that I wouldn't know what to recommend.

First off a 24 fret Jazz bass isn't slap friendly. The 24th fret is way to close to the neck PUP. 20 - 22 frets is optimal. That being said one of those Carvin SB basses would be your best choice and the cheapest at about $1200.00! It's hard to beat the slap tone on those monsters.

Might bear mentioning again - unless we're misreading, the OP is looking for something significantly different to the 'jazz tone', which is exactly what the SB nails... to absolute sweet active perfection.

One person mentioned a Peavey Cirrus. It's a good option. I also like my Yamaha TRB series for slap. I also like a clean modern sound for slap and the Yamaha does that for me well. Also 24 frets.

Hella yea, just like that flamboyant two-fingered playing technique. Everyone knows an electric bass should mainly be played with a pick. A big pick since the bass is bigger than a guitar. And none of that fancy noodling stuff either... just roots in the money zone.

I agree with the people who are raising an eyebrow at you wanting something besides a true J bass for a slap kind of thing. But hey, whatever digs you a groove, brother. Others have already mentioned the Stingray and Cirrus, but you seem to be looking for something a little off the beaten track, so how about the ESP-LTD B series?

+1 on the Carvin SB advice. I prefer a Jazz for slap, and there are numerous other great basses mentioned that are good at most everything, but an SB does a monsterous slap attack under proper hands that sounds very different from a Jazz.
