Double Bass I need help

What key is this baseline? And what notes are being played? People on various sites for years have been arguing. Can somebody give me some clarity?

Here is a basic sketch of both the Verse and Chorus: it looks like the Verse is in Bbminor, while the Chorus is in Dbmajor. The keys are Related, as they share the same Key Signature, but it makes better sense to not use the Key Signature too literally, but instead, follow the chord names (which may "contradict" the Key Signature at times.)

What notes do I play on the bass and I what order?


This song has caused noooooooo much confusion over the years. If you want I'll link u to some threads where a gang of musicians argued about it. Some people say its in A flat. I actually talked to Marcus Miller years ago and he was the only one besides u to have the sus 2 in there n he said something similar to Ab my boy said F min most cats on gear slutz said a min or c min

U and two others say B min I'm just confused smh

I heard you needed HELP!, and the tune is so good. AND I'm selfish - I get to figure out a small part of some music that sounds great.
I would recommend that now that you know the "roots" of the chords, you try to sing AND play along with the track, just playing the roots of the chords ( Bb....G.....). Then try to cop the fills and smaller gestures that that (excellent) bassist plays.
I tend NOT to try to get hung up on what KEY(s) its in, but to focus on hearing the root movement and whether the chords are Minor/Major/Something Else.

I think Don's advice is the voice of expertise and good reason, and terribly generous to boot. The one thing I'd add is... maybe you can try to listen to the recording, turn up the bass, turn down the treble and see if you can hear the bass notes the bassist is playing. If you can't, you can get software for your computer that will you isolate the bass and slow down the recording if you need it so you can figure out exactly what the bassist is playing. If you really want to do your homework, don't stop there, but figure out exactly what the guitarist and/or keyboardist is playing with the same software; you just loop the measure and play along until it sounds identical, and the best part is, it's not as hard of difficult as it sounds. Try it, I guarantee you'll like it. Better yet, it will help you develop the skills (ears) necessary to be a great musician.

Thank you immensely. That bassist is none other than the brilliant El Debarge himself. Ive listened to that song everyday almost for a 5 year span. It does something to my soul I can't explain. I even listened twice today. I'll study it definitely. You should take me up under your wing and teach me theory. I need a musical mentor I have none. You and Tom lane should guide n help me if you guys aren't too busy
