I need ideas for a new bass!

I would definitely look at a G&L L-2500. Doesn't have 3 band eq, but you really don't need it. These basses speak for themselves. For some reason, the resale market isn't wonderful on G&L's, so you can usually find one for under a grand. Very comfy neck too. Lakland 55-02 is also an option to consider.

Also forgot an important dislike: I don't like Stingrays, too much twang and its hard to mellow out IMO.[/QUOTE]

Don't get this ? Rays do have tone controls .What kinda music do you play ?

+1 more for a G&L. I don't understand why their values stay so low, but they are really versatile. I'd also look at used boutiques, even if you think you can't afford them. I own 2 Roscoes and didn't pay a grand for either, and either plays easier than 35" scale had me thinking theye would. Actually come to think of it, none of my G&Ls have set me back a grand either!

I'd talk to players in your area also, trades are always happening and thats where I've always had the best luck.

Can you describe the tone(s) you like? You don't like J pickups or EMGs so that already rules some things out.

Also in the end you need to go with your ears/gut, no one here is going to give you "the one".

Herein lies the problem. I don't have a speciddic tone I use, which is why I have a few basses. The SR and the BTB give me that modern/activity sound, I get that nice warm P tone from the Squier, and the Turser give me a big, full thump from the neck (but I'm almost ignoring that one for now as I'm trying to get rid of it anyway)

From what I've played (and I could be wrong) I find it hard to get a nice rounded out sound a la P sound from the J style pups, I can almost get what I want but it always just seems like somethings off which is understandable. EMGs may work I've only played cheaper Schecters and my old SpectorQ5 with them so I may have not played the best model EMG? I'm beginning to think I may have judged them too early. I've been looking at some LTD Surveyors though that have caught my eye with EMGs.

I play everything and I know it has a tone control...but even with it EQ'd down it still has the sound of an active bass, same with my Ibbys, which is why I use my Squier for that situation. Thats where the active/passive option would be nice if possible. I'm not hating on MMs they're just not my thing.

Out of your price range new, but an EBMM Big Al 5 would give you a lot of tonal options. Active/passive, 4-band EQ, 34" scale length, centre pickup will do the P-Bass sound well, but all the other possible combinations give a lot of sounds. And it really doesn't sound like a Stingray at all, with the sizzly top end. It's like the Swiss Army knife of basses. It does tend to have a love it or hate it type of style though.

Im not sure how much it would be, but you could get a jaguar and then try to get a new bridge and nut that are thin enough to fit on the neck. or just get a new 5 string neck and bridge.

Wouldn't I specifically need 5 string pups? Plus to put on a new neck, cut out the neck pocket to fit, and get a new bridge would it even be worth the money?

Music Man Big Al??? That thing has an INSANE amout of tones and what not.
Music Man Big Al Bass - YouTube
(they have a 5 string version dont worry :3)
And i would agree with the Deluxe P. Cant beat it.

Big Als are great basses I'm not disputing that. But the chances of me running into one, used, 5 string and in my price range and pretty slim especially where I live. I'd love one. Trust me. Same with a Bongo
