What I have is a 1984 USA made Charvel bass. Serial # 3515. Other than that, I don't know anything about it (model, materials, etc). What I'd like to find out is as much as I can about this bass, and about how much its worth. Someone wants to trade me this Charvel for my American Jazz bass (another one I know little about).

I don't really know anything about the jazz bass. I got in return for bail money from a friend. It has 22 frets like the deluxe models, but the pickups and circuit are passive. The tone pot has a center detent, which I've never seen on a passive bass before. The neck looks like its retained some age, so I'd guess a mid 90s American Jazz. I'll do some background check on the serial# for the jazz and get back to you if I find anything out.

Be careful with '80's Charvels. Even if they say "California" or "USA" on the neckplate, many are Korean or Japanese. It is really slimy what Charvel did as they basically lied about the origin of their basses. If you search the WWW you will find lots of info that will help you figure out where it was made. If it is a Korean/Japanese, it is worth $250-400 and if it is USA likely over $1000. Do your research as your Jazz is worth MUCH more than a far east manufacturered Charvel.

Check out the JCF (link below). There is more knowledge on the Jackson/Charvel Forum there than anywhere else I know of.

If it is a USA Charvel from the 80's I agree it will be worth the 1000.00 + range, if in good condition.

If the neck plate is a Charvel San Dimas plate you just might have something there!

I researched the serial number on the Charvel last night, and it seems to check out. The USA models started with 1000, mine is 3515. The neck plate is indeed a San Dimas Charvel plate. The guy I'm getting it from is the original owner, and he refinished it himself.

And as far as the plastic knobs on the j-bass, as far as I know, they're original equipment. I just saw another 93 jazz in tobacco sunburst on craigslist for 700 obo, looked exactly like mine, knobs and all.
